Slowly starting to run again

I’m keen to try and get back into running as I know that combined/alternated with cycilng it’s one of the best ways for me to lose weight fast, and that is the goal! ๐Ÿ™‚

Since I injured my knee back in August 2021 I haven’t done much running at all. Last year I tried to break myself back in gently and did literally 7 or 8 walk/run workouts in total between February and August 2022 – so averaging about 1 run a month!

In 2021, before my injury, I had only done about twice as many runs (17 recorded in my Garmin Connect app). So running definitely has been majorly on the backburner for two years really!

But regardless, I want to get back to it so, despite being well over 30 hours into my 36hr fast today I decided to start my running program. I have a modified version of the “couch to 5km” plan that is widely recommended for people new to running.

To be fair the “running” this evening amounted to nothing more than 4 minutes of jogging, spread across 8 sets of 30 seconds, with 2 minutes of walking intervals in between each set to recover. Plus 5 mins easy walking to warm up and cool down at the start and finish. So that’s just under 28 minutes in total, going cross country in the nature reserve behind where I live, for a total of 2.4km. But as I say, only 4 minutes of running! ๐Ÿ™‚

Still, you have to start somewhere, and if I can get 3 runs in a week I’ll soon see the weight fall off, which in turn of course will make running easier! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have no real goals at the moment beyond 30 mins of running. I don’t think I’m ever going to want to do long-distance running again – my knees tell me that would be a bad idea. But I’d like to run faster for shorter distances, building up to 5km in 30 mins which is about where I peaked during my triathlon training.
