Curses! Foiled again!!

So, last time I posted, I’d been having great results after applying myself to my fasting for just 10 days – I lost 10lbs, and got back under 18 stone which was great!

But then I went out for an evening run, and as it was getting dark I went and tripped over a tree stump! Darnit!

The damage was worse than I had initially thought – although I’d come down on my left elbow it seems like my left shoulder really took the brunt of my weight, but also my left knee twisted. As a result I was unable to swim, and definitely unable to run and cycle. And, as ever, that just hit my motivation so the fasting went out the window again.

That was 9th of July, so almost a month ago now. From July 5th I didn’t swim again until 21st. I had been up to 3 laps (1.5 miles / 2.25km) but had to go all the way back to just one lap (1/2 mile / 750m). I’ve had two swims a week since 21st and have been able to get back up to doing 2 laps (1 mile / 1.5km) although my shoulder still twinges so I am not pushing beyond that as I don’t want to overdo it.

I have only managed two bike rides in that time. While my knee has only twinged a little during my rides this all came at the time when the “great British summer” did it’s usual thing and switched to torrential rain and floods here, so while I felt able to do more cycling, I haven’t been motivated to go out in the rain. Swimming in the rain never bothers me since I’m going to get wet anyway! 🙂

I did try a brief walk/run workout but my knee definitely wasn’t having any of that, so apart from my daily dog walks I haven’t been able to work on my running fitness at all. Again, the weather has not encouraged me to do more.

I have had some manual labour to do which has helped me stay active – my wooden garden shed was starting to fall apart so I dismantled it (with a crowbar and axe – very cathartic!) and took it to the dump. I have a new plastic shed to build but it’s much larger – 6 foot longer in fact – so have been busy digging up the lawn and turning the soil so I can lay patio slabs as a new solid base. I should finish that tomorrow I hope – weather allowing.

And the forecast says the weather will pick up a bit – rain will hopefully be more intermittent over the coming days and we have another heatwave coming behind that so now seems a good time to try and get back into it.

First step – the inevitable weigh-in to see how much damage my break has caused. It’s certainly not great. I’ve put 6.5lbs on to take me back up to 18 stone 5.5lbs (257.5lbs / 116.8kgs). It could be worse, right? I’d lost 10lbs in 10 days and since then, despite not fasting/excercising diligently for almost a month I’ve only put a little over half of that weight back on.

No point beating myself up, just get back on the horse and start again.
