The pizza challenge – part 2

So, on Friday, I made and ate half a homemade pizza. ๐Ÿ• For science, obviously. ๐Ÿ˜

The results were much as expected – albeit not quite as bad, I saw my largest spike since using my Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) – from a pre-prandial (before eating) reading of 6.3 (113) I shot up to 8.4 (151!). However, my blood sugar recovered in about 1 hour 17 minutes. I was feeling quite good about that as it demonstrated that my insulin sensitivity (ability to respond to sugar spikes) is actually pretty healthy.

BUT – and it’s a big but – it was still a large spike, which likely caused some internal damage.

And it gets worse.

Overnight, my blood sugar averaged much higher than normal, averaging 6.1 (110). It then rose slowly and steadily throughout the morning before peaking at an astonishing 8.1 (146)!! And this is while fasting!!! This is after going out for my regular run (walk/run – six sets of 3 mins running, 1 min walking).

Now – that being said – there is an explanation for the peak at 8.1, since exercising, especially on a hot day like today, triggers adrenaline and cortisol which in turn signals the liver to release glucose.

But this is still like nothing I’ve seen in the last 10 days using my CGM, and the only other explanation is Friday’s pizza. For the first time ever, I threw pizza in the bin – the remaining half went straight in the trash. There is no way I was going to spike my blood sugar again.

And I’m glad I did – another dose of pizza would have been awful. I updated this blog post on Monday, more than 19 hours into my usual Sunday-til-Tuesday 36-hour fast, and after my usual Monday swim. That was approaching three full days after Friday’s pizza – and my blood sugar showed signs of returning to it’s usual baseline.

But then on Tuesday morning it was elevated again! That’s pushing four days of ill effects from half a homemade pizza!!

What an absolute disaster! ๐Ÿ˜”
